So I finally ran out of homemade laundry detergent (recipe without borax).
6 months after making the first batch!
And I used A LOT more than I actually needed.
A few random notes:
- grating soap is easier on fresh soap. After 6 months in the cupboard the soap was harder. Not too hard. But I remember when i just got the soap is was soft like butter and so easy to grate... Now it's more like what I expect soap to be.
- I will use less soap for each load, because it's clearly working well with about a cup of product.
- I have to pre-wash (= rub water and soap on) the stains, especially oily stains, but it's really not a problem... I keep clothes with special stains on top of the hamper and pre-wash them right before I go to the laundromat.
-Also I use the laundromat. And I noticed something worth sharing: some people use way too much product. I'll have to take a picture next time, some machines are WHITE with foamy soap. it's like they're using a half bottle for each load.
So of course if I pass after them, my clothes get their left overs detergent. I'm fine with that... I usually like the smell. But it's funny, I got used to my clothes smelling nothing. They are clean but they don't smell lavender or apple anymore.. So when they do, I know someone else went too heavy on his loads..
Or sometimes I bring the softener. I like it but as the laundromat is so close I usually go home after the water starts running, so I'm not there when it's time for softener.
- Making more detergent tomorrow morning, so I can use it Tuesday.

Hmm, I'm thinking about using a recipe I have when my current super-sized box of Tide runs out. I tried making my own detergent about 4/5 years ago and I wasn't impressed. I don't remember why. But I am inspired to try again.
I think we all use double what we need for detergent.
I'm finding that I can use less and less each time~
